3 of the Best…Hot Chocolates

It’s no secret that one of my favourite things about winter is hot chocolate and it will also come as no surprise to those who know me that I’m really really quite fussy about it. I try not to drink it very often so when I do I need to be rich and velvety, like liquid chocolate. Dirty Squirty* is optional, and Cadbury’s Drinking Chocolate need not apply. These are my three favourites:

dark_drinking_chocolate_low_res Charbonnel & Walker’s grated chocolate mix has been my hot chocolate of choice for years, especially when I want to add brandy to it. There’s nothing to dislike really – it comes in original or dark, the tins are lovely, it’s easy to make it as mild or intense as you like, and you can eat it with a spoon.

It’s available from various places, including  John Lewis, Lakeland, and here, and it’s £7.50 for 300g.

l-mint-drinking-chocolateMontezuma’s chocolate is amazing and their drinking variety is no different. Mint and chocolate is one of my favourite combinations and this manages to get the balance right without being sickly or overpowering. There are four other varieties, including Spiced Mandarin and Chili.

It’s a rather random £6.29 for 300g, available here.

carluccios chocolate

Unlike the previous two, this Carluccio’s offering isn’t grated chocolate but a more traditional powder. Normally I’d get all snobby about it but this stuff is amazing, transforming into a thick and creamy mixture of loveliness when whisked with hot milk. It’s good shit.

You can find it in Carluccio’s cafes or here for £5.25.

*other people call aerosol cream Dirty Squirty, right? Right?
