It’s taken me years to realise the benefits of blusher. When you’re as pale as me, it’s far too easy to go over-the-top with it and end up looking like a clown* but whacking on a bit in the right tone just adds a bit of life to my face – hooray for not looking dead. These three are my go-to shades for everyday – a coral, a nude, and a pink. I like the Real Techniques blusher brush with all of them as it’s great for applying a light wash of colour.
The shade at the bottom of the swatch is Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat. It’s described as a ‘poppy’ colour but it leans more coral on me. There’s a long spiel about how groundbreaking these blushers are (‘otherworldly’,’transformative’, and ‘breathtaking’ etc) and I’m not convinced that they live up to those superlatives completely but they are very nice. Each shade has a swirl of the corresponding Ambient Lighting Powder to give a luminosity and a very slight shimmer, and they have fairly good lasting power on me.
The blush in the middle is Max Factor’s newish Creme Puff Blusher in Nude Mauve. These little swirly pots have been hailed as a dupe for the Hourglass blushers, although they have two shades of blush, rather than a highlight. They’re brilliant value and give a lovely glow – the swatch is applied really heavily to show the colour but when I actually wear it is just gives a lovely tawny glow. I also have Lavish Mauve and have got my eye on a couple of the others…
The top shade is MAC Pro Longwear Blush in Stay Pretty. I grabbed this in Duty Free before a flight last year and proceeded to wear it every day of the holiday. It’s a bright and clean matte pink which really brightens up my face. It looks a bit scary in the swatch but again, that was with a heavy hand – it’s more of a pretty wash of colour when used with a lightly.
*in my head, clowns have little red cheeks. They might not but I can’t look them up because there ain’t nothin’ scarier than a clown. Shudder.
