2015 Favourites – Makeup

IMG_31172015 seems to have been the year of makeup in Chez Mouse. I’m still far from being able to whip out a smoky eye in 3 minutes or wear red lipstick everyday but I’ve definitely branched out a bit. For my favourites I’ve tried to stick to one product per category but there’re a couple of ‘highly commended’ products at the end – picking just one is bloody hard!

Base:

I still haven’t found my perfect foundation but the one that I’ve been reaching for most this year is the L’Oreal Infallible 24h-Matte foundation in 10 Porcelain. I wouldn’t describe it as matte, as such – more glowy without being dewy in any way. It sets really well, lasts all day, and doesn’t highlight any pores or dry patches. It’s not quite pale enough so I’ve been adding a couple of drops of MAC Face and Body in White to lighten it (this stuff is a godsend if no foundation ever suits your super pale skin; it’s quite pricey but will last for years and should stop you wasting money on bases that make you look like an oompa loompa).

There have been a couple of primers floating around in my makeup bag but Soap & Glory Hocus Focus is the one I’ve been using the most. It adds a really subtle pearlescent glow, softens any foundation that looks too matte, and can be dolloped into the foundation if you don’t have time to apply it first. Good stuff.

The concealer in the photo is actually the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Corrector and it’s brilliant. I have it in shade 1 Porcelain Bisque and it really helps to hide my blue-toned undereye shadows before concealer – go for one of the peach options if your shadows tend towards the brown-toned.

Highly commended: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation in 01 – stupid name, great product; Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Fair Neutral – brilliant for under the eyes and for covering redness, meh at concealing blemishes.

Face:

My blusher collection has grown this year but I’ve still found myself picking the out same two – Sleek Rose Gold and my pick of the year, Tarte Exposed. It’s a really natural tawny shade which goes with almost any colour lipstick. Lots of people comment about how pigmented Tarte blushers are but, to be honest, Exposed really isn’t. I actually find it quite hard to pick up lots on the brush, which it great for me as it’s really hard to overdo. Maybe the other shades are softer..?

My go-to highlighter has been Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight 01,  a soft champagne gold with a very slight pink tinge that makes you glow without looking like a unicorn has farted on you. I don’t have a favourite bronzer as I’ve never found one light enough, although I have high hopes about the Ciaté x Olivia Palermo Cheek Duo in Bluff Point that I picked up the other day.

Highly commended: Sleek Rose Gold blusher – a pretty good dupe for Nars Orgasm but, in my opinion, nicer and slightly less orange; Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette – full review here.

Eyes:

I’m still using the Nars Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base before any shadow and still love it but, frankly, the tube is so grubby that I couldn’t bear to put it in the photo. The shadows that I’ve been reaching for the most are Kiko Long Lasting Stick Shadow in 05 (just like last year. Who said Librans were bad with change?) and the Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 palette. The former is just so easy to draw on, smudge in with a finger (or brush if I’m feeling fancy) and then it’s there for the day.

The palette is brilliant for days when I want to look as if I’ve made a bit of an effort but still understated, but it can also be beefed up a bit if I want more of a ‘look’. You can use the darkest shade, Undone, as a powder liner, but I always stick with my Kat von D Tattoo liner because the brush nib is amazing at drawing really fine lines, it’s one of the one liners I’ve found that doesn’t smudge on me, and it’s really really black. The drawback is that you can’t get it in the UK unless you order from Sephora. Bollocks. I don’t have a favourite mascara this year but have liked these three, as well as Clinique Lash Power.

Highly commended: Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Rouge Noir – review here; Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Bronzed Garnet – longlasting, easy to scribble on and blend, gorgeous colour. Review coming soon.

Lips:

Lipsticks are where I’ve really become more daring recently. I started 2015 with about 8 and I’ve started 2016 with about 64; it’s been a busy year. It was really hard to narrow it down to one favourite but in the end I went for my first Tom Ford lipstick. Of all the names available in the Lips and Boys collection – Leonardo, Drake, Rafael, Joaquin – I’ve ended up loving Collin. Fabulous. He is great though, a warm rosey plummy shade which is close enough to my lip colour to be natural but obvious enough to look polished. He’s the smaller version of Indian Rose, which I’ll definitely be getting when Collin runs out.

Highly commended: Nuxe Rêve de Miel lipbalm – I’m still on my first pot, which has lasted over a year, and stick some on every morning before lipstick; Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Dragon Girl – a super bright cherry red that looks quite pink on my lips. It’s confidence in a pencil.

Last but not least, I have to mention the squidgy pink egg in the photo. I’d used the Real Techniques version before and hadn’t really got the fuss but when I picked up an actual Beauty Blender on a whim, I finally understood the hype. It’s become my favourite way to apply foundation (there’s something very therapeutic about bouncing it over your face in the morning) and just seems to make base makeup mesh with the skin better than a brush. It’s even meant that Nars Sheer Glow works for me without looking truly horrendous by lunchtime, which is something of a miracle. Hurrah for the marvellous little eggs.

What were your favourite products of last year?

2015’s skincare picks coming very soon…
