Boring but brilliant dressing table essentials

Boring but brilliant

These three products might not be the most glamourous or exciting but they are among the most reached for in my routine and they all have one thing in common: they take off the pretty stuff that I spend ages semi-skillfully smearing on.

The Nivea Daily Essentials Double Effect Eye Make-up Remover has an unnecessarily long name but is the best thing I’ve found for taking off my eye makeup, including waterproof mascara and liner, without leaving that ridiculous film over my eyes that makes me feel as if I’m on the wrong side of a Vaseline-coated lens. It also removes tubing mascara, which is handy for when I’m too lazy to take the care to do it separately at the sink. It’s a bi-phase solution, so you have to give it a good shake before use, and it seems to have the perfect balance of oiliness to gentleness. It’s also only about £4 a bottle so you don’t have to worry about using it up quickly.

The O.P.I. Acetone-free Nail Polish Remover is one of the only removers that I’ve found that doesn’t destroy my nails but does what it says on the bottle and takes the damn polish off. So many ‘gentle’ formulas don’t actually do anything without masses of scraping away at the polish so you end up doing more damage than you would by using one with acetone in the first place. The O.P.I. isn’t the cheapest but a bottle lasts for ages and my nails are in a much better state than they were when I was using either Essie remover or the Bourjois pots.

Finally, the DHC Olive Virgin Oil Cotton Swabs are ruddy marvellous and I wish I’d discovered them sooner. Housed in a rather cute box are 50 individually-wrapped cotton buds infused with olive oil which are absolutely perfect for keeping in your bag for neatening makeup, soothing sore dry cuticles (what? I’m a delicate flower), and adding a tiny bit of moisture to dry lips. I especially love these for sorting out the inevitable mess I make of eyeliner flicks – just make sure to blot any oily residue so you don’t end up looking like a panda.

Nivea Daily Essential Double Eye Makeup Remover £3.89 at Boots
O.P.I. Acetone-free Polish Remover £7.35, but currently £5.25 at Beauty Bay
DHC Olive Virgin Oil Cotton Swabs £5.50 at Feel Unique
