Lipstick love: my current go-to for the perfect daytime red lip

Nars Dragon Girl and Clinique Lip Pop in Cherry Pop

I’m a firm believer in the power of red lipstick. It’s a confidence giver, a day-brightener, and a great way to distract from a less-than-perfect skin day (providing that the spots/red patches aren’t around your mouth). Whilst I like a slightly darker red for the evening, a bright, pinky, blue-toned red feels less daunting for daytime and only needs a fair amount of mascara and some highlighter to look great.

My current favourite combo of products for this are Nars Velvet Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl and Clinique Pop Lip Colour and Primer in Cherry Pop. They’re a really similar tone but the Nars is matte and the Clinique is really rather moisturising. Although I like them separately too, together they provide really long-lasting colour and an almost satin finish; the Nars acts as an all-over lip pencil so as the Clinique wears off, you’re left with a great stain underneath.

Both brands are widely available. Dragon Girl is currently in stock at John Lewis for £20 here (although isn’t the colour that shows up – no idea why, sorry!) and Cherry Pop is at Boots for £16 here.

How do you feel about red lips? Strictly for the evening or suitable to any place, any time?

  • Love the Clinique one, especially since it’s moisturizing 😀
