My current travel makeup bag

I’ve called this post my ‘current travel makeup bag’ as if I’m one of those people who’s jetting off on trips at the drop of a hat – I’m really not, sadly. Having said that, these are the things that were grabbed last time I went away with Mr Mouse for a night in Edinburgh and is probably what will come with us to the exotic North East coast of Scotland later in the month, possibly with the addition of the Urban Decay Basics 2 palette. Do I need highlighter for a week in rural Aberdeenshire? Well, no, probably not, but since when is cheek adornment based on need? Let’s have a closer look at what I’ve chosen…

Starting with base products, we have the new Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Terre Neuve. I featured this in my post about pale foundations so I haven’t included a swatch here. It’s a great base, has SPF 35 (although I’d never rely on that alone), and can be blended out enough that it somehow doesn’t look too dark. I do usually need concealer though; I like the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer (seriously, can product names please get shorter?) in Fair Neutral for under my eyes, usually over the top of the Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand, which has salmon tones to slightly cancel out the inevitable dark circles. I find the UD a little too creamy for blemishes so I use the NYX Concealer Wand in Porcelain, which is slightly drier and stays put, especially with the Nars  Magic Light Reflecting Setting Powder on top.

Next up are cheeks and I’ve got the Ciaté x Olivia Palermo Cheekbone Cheat in Bluffpoint for a bit of colour and the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Pearl for sheen and glow and LOOK! I’M A UNICORNness. I found the bronzer and blusher duo in TK Maxx and I’m not sure I would have bought it otherwise as bronzers and me don’t really get on, but it was a bargain and I kind of love it. Both shades work well with my ghostly face when applied with a light hand and stop me looking exhumed when I’m really tired. The Becca highlighter is one of my favourite things at the moment and the photo doesn’t do it justice. It’s gleamy and glowy and only a tiny bit glittery which doesn’t really show up on the face, and the super white pale tone is perfect for me.

For eyes I have two eyeshadow sticks, an eyeliner, and a mascara. Neither of the eyeshadows are easily available, I’m afraid, but both the Marc Jacobs Twinkle Pop Eyeshadow in Volver and the Kiko Moon Shadow Water Infused Eyeshadow in 02 are gorgeous and both last really well, especially with theBalm Put a Lid on It primer. The liner is my standard Kat von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, and the mascara is also a favourite – Clinique Lash Power, which is tubing and has a teeny brush which is great for wiggling around at the roots of the lashes.

Last up we have lips and I managed to restrict myself to three – go me. My current go-to when I can’t be bothered to think about what to wear is the NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu, which is glossy but not sticky. The two ‘proper’ colours are Mac Mehr, which is great for staying power without being drying, and Bobbi Brown Art Stick in Dusty Pink, which is brighter whilst still being fairly neutral. It also comes with a giant pencil sharpener, which appeals to my inner child.

The thing about most of these products is that I don’t need a huge number of brushes to apply them. I’ll take a beauty blender for base, a blusher brush, and an eyeshadow brush, which can double up for highlighter. Pretty minimal, right? Oh, the makeup bag is from Asos and is ace – real leather, leopard print ponyskin, and roomy enough for all of this stuff. Bargain for £15.

One of these days I’ll manage to write a post that’s shorter than a novella, I promise!

What do you take with you when you go away?
